EOTech is the world’s leading manufacturer of holographic sights and electro-optics. Based out of Ann Arbor, Michigan, EOTech maintains a high reputation for excellence.

They were the first to make holographic sights and they remain a pioneer in the field. EOTech manufactures and markets holographic sights primarily to military and law-enforcement agencies.

The ruggedness, reliability, and the price of their products reflects this professional orientation.

There is a crucial distinction between holographic sights and dot sights. In a dot sight, the reticle is reflected back onto the shooter’s eye off of the front objective lens. In a holographic sight the reticle is projected onto the front objective lens as a hologram.

One advantage of holographic sights over red dot sights is that even if the front objective lens is partially obscured, the holographic reticle stays visible.

The other is that, since the reticle is the product of a laser, not an LED, its brightness can be set much dimmer than dot sight reticles. The brightness of the reticle on the EOTech 512.A65 is adjustable to thirty different settings.

The front objective lens on the EOTech 512.A65 is made of 1/8″ solid glass. The rear lens is made of a shatter-proof laminate. Both lenses have an anti-glare coating. The sight itself is protected by an aluminum hood, which adds to its heftiness and durability.

GE DIGITAL CAMERATo generate the holographic reticle the sight must utilize a laser. Red dot sights, all appearances to the contrary, do not employ lasers: they use a simple yet powerful LED to project the dot.

As a consequence of using lasers, the power demands of holographic sights are much higher than those of red dot sights.

The EOTech 512.A65 runs off a pair of AA batteries, which are responsible for much of its bulk and its weight: batteries included, the entire assembly weighs almost three quarters of a pound.

The advertised battery life on the EOTech 512.A65 is up to 1000 hours, although obviously this depends on the brightness setting.

The interior of the optic is flooded with nitrogen and sealed, which makes the EOTech fog-proof unless the tube casing is broken or damaged. The entire assembly is also water-proof to a maximum depth of 10 feet

The style of reticle is a lot more “tactical” than those of other red dot sights we’ve reviewed. Rather than a standard dot-type reticle, the EOTech 512.A65 sports a circle reticle for fast target-acquisition with an aiming dot in the center.

The circle delimits a 65-MOA target area and the dot is a highly precise reticle of 1 MOA. The field of view at 100 yards is a generous 30 yards.

At 100 yards, parallax is completely eliminated. MOA adjusts in 1/2 clicks, or 1/2 inch per click at 100 yards. The mounting system fits a standard 1″ Weaver-style dovetail, and is fully compatible with mil-spec Picatinny rails.

Equipped with all these features, the EOTech 512.A65 comes in at around $400. Keep in mind, however, that the primary consumer of EOTech sights is the US military who use them on platforms like the M4 and AR 15.
